My art canvas is the eggshell.

Eggs have been a part of folk art and folklore in many cultures. Traditionally egg art is given as an expression of love and friendship. I learned the art of Ukrainian egg decoration (pysanky) over 20 years ago from a friend.

The basic process is a wax resist method often called batik. A design outline is drawn on the eggshell with melted beeswax  using an instrument called a kistka. The shell is then placed in dye, when removed, the portion of the design you wish to remain that color is covered with more wax. This process is repeated with each successive dye color (lightest to  darkest). When coloring is complete, the wax is melted off to reveal the design.

In addition to traditionally decorated  chicken and goose eggs, I have made hinged eggshell boxes, ostrich eggshell bowls and lamps.

To make this art form more accessible to people, I have created a line of ostrich eggshell jewelry. Each piece is individually handmade and takes many hours to complete. Although I frequently repeat designs, due to the characteristics of shells and dyes, no two pendants are ever exactly alike. The pendants are backed with epoxy, are very sturdy and difficult to break. Pendants are hung from a leather cord or sterling silver chain.
